Bree’s maternity session unfolded at sunset at Usery Mountain, wrapped in golden light and the quiet of the Sonoran desert. In a flowing teal gown, surrounded by saguaros and the warm colors of an Arizona evening, she and her partner counted down the last days before their baby arrives. Every frame from this session feels calm, connected, and timeless. This is Bree’s sunset maternity session, told image by image.
A sunset session like this is one of the best reasons to work with a Phoenix maternity photographer who knows the desert, and Bree’s evening at Usery Mountain shows exactly what the light out here can do.
Golden light at Usery Mountain Regional Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park sits in the Sonoran desert in Mesa, part of Maricopa County just east of Phoenix, where the saguaros stand tall and the mountains catch the last of the sun. We planned Bree’s session for the golden hour, when the light goes soft and warm and the whole desert seems to slow down. It is one of our favorite outdoor settings in the Mesa area, and it gave her gallery a sense of place only the Sonoran desert can.
As the evening moved on, the light shifted from bright and open to deep and golden, and Bree’s teal gown glowed against it. If you are choosing where to hold your own session, it helps to weigh outdoor vs studio maternity photography, since a setting like this changes the whole feeling of the gallery.
A connection worth photographing
The heart of this session was the two of them. Bree’s partner never left her side, and the easy way they leaned into each other made our job simple.
They held up a tiny outfit for the baby on the way, kissed between frames, and settled onto a desert bench like they had all the time in the world. Those unhurried, genuine moments are a big part of why maternity photos are worth keeping long after the newborn days arrive.
As the sun dropped low
When the sun sank toward the mountains, the whole session turned cinematic. We caught Bree in the warm, low light with her partner close and the sky burning gold behind them.
Then came the frame everyone waits for: Bree’s gown catching the breeze and sweeping across the desert as the sun flared behind her. A gown like this was made for a moment like that, which is why a little thought about what to wear for a outdoor maternity session makes such a difference outdoors.
Silhouettes and one last kiss
As the sun slipped behind the saguaros, the sky did the rest. We turned Bree and her partner into silhouettes against the last blaze of color, the curve of her bump framed by the glow.
Then one last kiss in the fading light, the desert going quiet around them, a calm close to a beautiful evening.
Meet the team behind Kandid Clicks Photography
We are Rahul and Shachi Kaul, the married couple behind Kandid Clicks Photography, based in the Phoenix area with more than ten years and over two hundred weddings behind us. Photographing another couple, the way we did with Bree and her partner, is something we understand from the inside, and it shapes how we work. One of us reads the wide, cinematic frame while the other stays close for the quiet glance between two people, so the connection you see in these photos is the real thing, not a pose we called out. We also edit true to color and skip the heavy filters, so a sunset this beautiful stays exactly as warm and honest as it was, long after the trends move on. You will find more of these evenings across the Phoenix maternity portfolio.
The cameras behind a sunset session
Sunset gives you a narrow, fast-moving window: the color peaks, the silhouettes line up, and the whole scene shifts minute by minute. Between us we shoot a Canon R5 Mark II and a Canon R6 Mark II, which is what lets us keep pace as the light changes and the sun drops behind the saguaros. The R5 Mark II carries the fine detail in Bree’s gown and the desert, and the R6 Mark II handles the deep, low-contrast light of the last few minutes when the silhouettes happen. Two bodies across two photographers means one of us can expose for the glowing sky while the other keeps a portrait ready, so we never lose a moment to a settings change. Everything is shot in RAW and edited true to color, so the sunset you see is the one that was actually there.

FAQs
Common questions about sunset maternity photography sessions
What time should a sunset maternity session start?
We build the start time around the actual sunset for your date, usually arriving about an hour before so we can work through the golden light and into the silhouettes at the very end. That window moves through the year, so we confirm the exact time once your date is set.
Is Usery Mountain a good spot for maternity photos?
It is one of our favorites in the Mesa area. The saguaros, open desert, and mountain backdrop give every frame a classic Arizona feel, and the western view makes for incredible sunsets. There are gentle, accessible spots inside Usery Mountain Regional Park that work well even in the later weeks of pregnancy.
Can my partner be part of the session?
Absolutely, and Bree’s gallery shows how much a partner adds. We photograph plenty of solo portraits and plenty of the two of you together, and the connection between a couple is often what makes a maternity gallery feel complete.
When in pregnancy is the best time for a sunset session?
Around 30 to 34 weeks suits most moms, when the bump is full but you are still comfortable on a short desert walk. If you would like help choosing the best time for a maternity photoshoot around your due date, we are happy to guide you
